Gibson Firebird Platypus Electric Guitar - Core - Black

In the early months of 1965, the original Firebird™ design underwent several notable changes.

One of the key modifications was the introduction of the “Non-Reverse” headstock shape. This new design replaced the original Reverse headstock, which had a two-layered structure with a holly veneer, with a flatter profile reminiscent of a platypus bill. The Platypus-style Firebird also switched to six-in-line tuners, moving away from the banjo-style tuners found on earlier models. This version pays homage to those rare transitional guitars, featuring a mahogany body with a glued-in set neck that resembles the traditional neck-through design of the Reverse Firebird. The mahogany neck boasts a SlimTaper™ profile and a rosewood fretboard, topped with the modified Platypus-style headstock equipped with Grover® Mini Rotomatic® tuners. This headstock modification ensures a straight string pull, reducing friction and enhancing tuning stability.

The Firebird is renowned for its striking appearance, and the Firebird Platypus elevates this iconic design with its distinctive look. Its sound is equally remarkable, thanks to two historically accurate Firebird mini humbucker™ pickups with Alnico 5 magnets, which produce a bell-like chime when played clean and deliver powerful rock and blues tones when pushed. With individual volume and tone controls, you can customize your sound, and the pickguard proudly displays the classic hot-stamped Firebird graphic.
